The Ministry of Howard Alexander Continues These days, as when it opened, the Valley Mission provides a spot of emergency shelter for the homeless. The rules are few, but everyone who stays at the shelter must be working or actively seeking a job, said David Reed, Executive Director of the Mission from summer 2009 to fall 2011. ‘You will find some very good community people who are here (sheltered at the Mission),’ he said. ‘We consider them our neighbors and guests....you’ll find a very good group of people who hit a bump or two along the way and found themselves here.’ ‘The truth is, ministry happens at the point of people’s needs,’ Reed said, ‘If we weren’t needed here, we wouldn’t be here.’ Howard Alexander understood that. His life became a ministry to those in need. – adapted from an article by Chase Purdy, The News Virginian, published November 24, 2009 |
