Why Give to Us?Since 1971, Valley Mission has operated as a caring and careful steward of all money and resources to which we've been entrusted. As the only shelter for the homeless in three surrounding counties, Valley Mission's work benefits a large and growing population. From the start, Valley Mission has focused on ways to assist the low-income of the area, with shelter being the greatest need, but only one of the needs we seek to help. The root of Valley Mission's work rests on the power of faith to heal and restore lives. Maintaining this focus has guided the Valley Mission Board and Staff to develop policies of inclusiveness and create a refuge for those in need. We work at all times to offer genuine support and guidance free of judgments from the past. From years of experience and knowledge gained through effort, Valley Mission is working towards a grand vision of uplifting our community by helping to improve the lives of those who struggle the most. Only with renewed support can we continue on this important path. 2009: Year In Review The past year has been a whirlwind of changes at Valley Mission. New leadership, new staff, and new directions…all focused on better serving those that come to us in need. In the past year Valley Mission provided:-Food Baskets to 40 households with a total of 76 people. -Clothing to 303 shelter residents with a value of $1,577.60. -Clothing to 121 community members with a value of $1,429.10. -64 household items with a value of $2,620.90. -Utility assistance for 99 neighbors with a value of $5,117.51 -Prescription assistance provided by an area church partner with a value of $516.57. -164 diapers for community members and shelter residents. Valley Mission served 30,376 meals to residents, 4,607 meals to community members, for a total of 34,983 meals served. That’s an average of 96 meals served per day. The shelter bed space provided included 10,207 nights for men, 3,545 nights for women, and 2,310 nights for children. There was an average of 44 people provided shelter per night, with our highest evening reaching 67 people in shelter. On any given night there was an average of 28 men, 10 women, and 6 children in shelter. The total number of individual men, women, and children served was 393. We served a total of 221 single men, 63 single women, 4 married couples without children, 13 families with both parents, 16 families headed by the mother, and 59 children of all ages. A total of 111 people stayed in shelter less than 5 nights, that is 28% of the people served. The average length of stay for all people served was 41 days. For those that stayed 5 or more days the average length of stay increased to 56 days in shelter. The average length of stay for single men was 43 days, for single women it was 36 days, for couples without children it was 28 days, and for families it was 38 days. While Valley Mission does not have a set length of stay the numbers indicate that few people choose to stay in shelter longer than necessary. But we are dedicated to helping those who are homeless, whether it is for one night or many nights.
