Local Business Owner Helps Shelter Residents
Niko Ibarra, owner of Cortes de Niko in Waynesboro, has stepped up to volunteer his expertise as a Barber and Hairstylist to residents at Valley Mission once a month.
"A lot of people have helped me, and I wanted to give something back. And when I get a haircut it makes me feel better so I thought it was something I could do to help others in the community."
Inspired by his example, another Hairstylist from the Salon, Marla von Seldeneck has also joined in the effort.
Offering their professional skills is especially generous at a time when the economy has affected their own income. But it was seeing others struggling, and knowing how it feels, that made Mr. Ibarra decide to take action to help. As a courtesy to his customers Mr. Ibarra also offers weekly discounts through his business. "In times like these we need to help each other."
Cortes do Niko is located at 250 B North Poplar Avenue in Waynesboro. For more information you may contact Mr. Ibarra at (540) 949-9233
"Bunk Bed" Project
The Staunton Elks Lodge #351 has been awarded $10,000 by the Elks National Foundation to build and equip 35 wooden bunk beds for the men’s dormitory at Valley Mission shelter in Staunton.
G.R. Davis, Staunton Elks Project Manager, said that a tour of the facility quickly revealed an area of need in which their group could help. Building 35 bunks would raise the men’s dorm capacity to 70 and would allow for the current metal bunks to be used to establish a dorm for single women. This new
women’s dorm would then permit the remaining rooms to be used for families. Exalted Ruler, Bill Schindler agreed and the Impact Grant was sought on behalf of Valley Mission.
Along with the 35 bunks to be constructed, which will include storage trundles underneath, the Elks will purchase mattresses and linens for all beds. If not for the help of local businesses donating some supplies, and without the volunteer labor provided by the Elks, it is estimated this project would cost about $35,000.
"Giving" Library
All the staff at Valley Mission work to positively impact the people we serve. In developing new directions we are sometimes presented with opportunities not of our own design but ones that naturally complement our work.

And so it was when Cindy Correll from The Staunton Newsleader contacted us about an idea to put a new book in the hands of each child who comes to stay at the Mission. The Newsleader had received some new books, and with the support of their Publisher, Mr. Roger Watson, the staff excitedly prepared a donation that included books for all ages.
With this donation the "Giving Library" was formed. We are now seeking additional new books for children and teens so that every child can experience the joy of choosing a new book for their very own. If you would like to help with this effort please contact us at (540) 886-4673 or email wendyshiflett@valleymission.net.
