Special events are a vital source of not only operational support, but also spreading community awareness concerning the needs of the homeless. Each year Valley Mission hosts the following events.
Volunteer Appreciation Cookout
APRIL Conducted in April, volunteers join clients and staff for an outdoor cookout celebrating the commitment of our team and our collaborations to help the homeless. Please refer to our Facebook page for more information regarding the next Volunteer Appreciation cookout.
Second Chance Prom
APRIL Dancing the night away and reliving high school memories is just part of the fun of the Second Chance Prom. This year’s prom is occurring in Fall 2020.
Thrift Store Customer Appreciation Days
JULY Each July, both of our thrift stores conduct Customer Appreciation Days whereby our loyal shoppers can mingle with staff, enjoy refreshments, and best of all, realize tremendous savings on store merchandise. The dates for this year’s event have not yet been determined. To stay abreast of these events and other matters regarding the thrift stores, refer to each store’s individual Facebook page, Staunton and Waynesboro.
Dobby Sock Sale
SEPTEMBER As one of the many non-profit participants of Queen City Mischief and Magic, Valley Mission takes full advantage of this local family-oriented event. Each year in September Valley Mission staff, board and volunteers sell socks and various other goods to those who visit our city for QCMM. Check us out at “Do Good Alley” on September 25-27 this year. Check out our Facebook page for updates to this year’s QCMM happenings.
Giving Tuesday
NOVEMBER The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year non-profit organizations around the globe are recognized through end of year charitable contributions, most often contributed online. This day of charitable giving marks the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season, inspiring those to see beyond the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday to helping agencies who exist to help others. Join us in celebrating Giving Tuesday this year on December 1st.
St. Nicholas Day Social and Share the Warmth
DECEMBER Help those experiencing homelessness obtain gloves, coats, and other warm winter essentials while kicking off the holiday season with a cup of hot chocolate and a sweet treat. Each December Valley Mission participates in the Share the Warmth drive sponsored by Buckingham Branch Railroad. Father Christmas and friends arrive on the train, arms laden with clothing and toys designated for Valley Mission clients. After the work is done, enjoy a hot cup of cocoa in the Grand Concourse at Stelle Rose. All proceeds benefit our shelter. Check out our Facebook page in November for details.
